Earth Hour: impact beyond the hour

Tomorrow at 8:30 – 9:30pm is Earth Hour, which means millions of people across the world will be switching off their non-essential lights for the 60 minutes. The annual campaign, led by WWF, is a global movement to protect our planet and has become the biggest of its kind. Last year, 188 countries and territories got involved and this year, the campaign’s focus is the loss of nature and ‘why nature matters to you’. Indeed, the Earth’s biodiversity is suffering from our destructive activities and without a functioning natural environment, we will be the ones that suffer.

60 Minutes won’t save the world, but that’s not the point. Earth Hour raises huge amounts of awareness and sparks much needed conversations around energy consumption, climate change and the state of our planet. By joining the movement and showing your solidarity for the cause, switching off for Earth Hour is a symbolic acknowledgement and commitment to act now. Among its highlights, the movement has helped light up homes with solar power in India and the Philippines and has created a 2,700-hectare Earth Hour forest in Uganda.
At Jump, we’re all for working together and making big changes, and Earth Hour is just one example of empowering people to do so. From our students at the University of Bristol to employees at Barclays, this month our Jump participants have been pledging their participation in Earth Hour. So join us and step up to the challenge!
Our Jump engagement programme goes beyond the hour and helps drive long term energy reductions. The plethora of online activities provide energy saving tips and switch off checklists and encourage individuals to save energy wherever they can, and rewards them for doing so. We can’t think of anything more atmospheric than a candlelit dinner or a bit of stargazing for a Saturday evening, so spread the word and get your colleagues, friends and family on board!
And don't forget to join the conversation on social media too #EarthHourUK #Connect2Earth.
It’s your time to shine (but not those lights please!).
