"We love to see the re-use of discarded materials. Directly re-using materials is the number one best way to tackle waste, even beating recycling. It cuts out the need for raw materials, saving lots of energy and protecting ecosystems. It's also great to see how fairly traded products like this can generate employment and raise living standards for women in Bangladesh."
Maison Bengal was set up in 2004 after the founder and director Sheenagh Day returned from years of aid work in Dhaka. Sourcing all the products from marginalized communities the company aims to economically empower some of the poorest people in India. By creating a market for these beautiful and desirable products they enable economically vulnerable people, particularly women, to use readily available natural products to make a sustainable living and work themselves out of poverty.
