I love March as Spring and Summer are just round the corner and this is the month I can really get back out into my garden. I’ve been rediscovering the delights of composting and personally one of the most satisfying things for me as a gardener is to mix up all our old food waste with my garden waste and to spread it around the borders – maybe it’s just a man thing about spreading muck around! It’s great to know that it’s all organic and my shrubs certainly seem to appreciate the attention….
Composting kitchen waste is particularly satisfying and really helps to make me and my family think about food waste – the Government agency WRAP has got a good campaign going, Love Food Hate Waste and really everyone with a garden should be composting their kitchen waste. One of our top-selling products is the CompoSphere which I think is proving popular because it’s a new product that has applied a strong aesthetic design to a basic function, composting, and as well as looking attractive it is all made from recycled plastic and its unique round shape means it can be rolled around the garden which not only helps with anaerobic digestion but also makes it easy to get the compost to the place you want it. This is an unashamed plug for the CompoSphere as it’s a great British-designed product!
Wormeries are also a must for anyone wanting an all-natural waste disposal unit – and they are a great way to engage kids in the wonders of nature and biograding! Of course, to get the best quality compost from kitchen waste you need good quality organic veg peelings, so how about investing in our organic veg box to give your compost the very best start.
I’m not sure if it’s just that I’ve got young kids who like nothing better than planting seeds and watching them grow, but I really do feel the UK is getting back into the whole ‘grow your own’ thing, no doubt helped by the sight of celebrities like Jamie Oliver and Hugh Fearnley-Whitingstall cooking up their home grown vegetables. As a trustee for Trees for Cities it is very encouraging to see the charity’s Edible Playground project gathering in momentum. A nation of gardeners can only be a good thing!
